Division 1 Quiz Bowl Champions
Springdale’s Jr. Beta Club Quiz Bowl team placed first at the National Convention in Orlando on Monday, June 26. They qualified for an invitation to Nationals by winning the Division 1 state title at the Georgia Convention in November. In Orlando, twenty-four teams competed in a written exam, from which the top eight teams were selected for the oral rounds. After three undefeated oral rounds, Springdale was named this year’s Division 1 Quiz Bowl Champion. Team members include Sofia Ali (team captain), Bennett Barkley, Nathan Haskell, and Griffin Moore. Sponsors are Francile Jackson, Jennifer Johnston, and Anne Oxford, and the team’s coach is Susan Mason.
Let’s Move! Active Schools is an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama that aims to ensure 60 minutes of physical activity a day for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Of the 544 schools honored nationally as Let’s Move! Active Schools, 16 were from Bibb County –Alexander II Magnet, BruceElementary, Bernd Elementary, Heard Elementary, Ingram-Pye Elementary, Lane Elementary, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, Porter Elementary, Skyview Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Weaver Middle, Central High, Howard High, Rutland High, and Southwest High. Powered by a national collaborative of leading health, education and private sector organizations, Let’s Move! Active Schools equips schools with the resources, programs, professional development and grants to increase physical education and physical activity opportunities for students, and to cultivate an Active School environment. To earn a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before and after school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.
