Teacher of the Year Program

Bibb County's Teacher of the Year Program

Teacher of the Year Selection Process for Selecting the Bibb Teacher of the Year
(Please note this process is modeled after the Georgia Teacher of the Year Program and the National Teacher of the Year Program, and is subject to change each year.)

1. Each school selects a Teacher of the Year and an Alternate. Schools have autonomy in their selection process, but are encouraged to adhere to the following state guidelines below when naming a Teacher of the Year.

The Georgia Teacher of the Year candidate should be:

  • A full-time, certified classroom teacher with a valid and current Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) Professional or Advanced/Lead Professional certificate in Pre-K through Grade 12. Special education, physical education, art, music, media specialists and ROTC teachers. (Counselors and Speech Pathologists are not eligible for the state or national TOTY.) Active teaching status is defined as spending at least 50 percent of contract time teaching students in a classroom setting through the term of the Teacher of the Year. Supervisory responsibilities should be of secondary consideration.
  • An exceptional, dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled teacher who is planning to continue in active classroom teaching status for the duration of the Bibb and Georgia Teacher of the Year award period.
  • An expert in the field who advances growth for students of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Builds collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, and families to create a school culture of success.
  • Plays an active and useful role in the community as well as in the school.
  • Deliberately connects the classroom to community to impact student growth and learning.
  • As a lifelong learner and teacher leader, utilizes innovation to create learning experiences within and beyond the classroom.
  • Expresses themselves in an engaging and clear way, conveying the classroom experience to a variety of audience.
  • A teacher who has the ability and desire to be an articulate spokesperson for public education.

2. Each school submits the names of the Teacher of the Year and the Alternate to the Department of Communications by the established deadline each spring.

3. The Department of Communications sends each Teacher of the Year an application packet. The Teacher of the Year from each school must submit the completed application packet to Kim Pelt, Department of Communications, by email to Kimberly.Pelt@bcsdk12.net, by an established deadline prior to the end of the school year.

4. Application packets submitted late will be disqualified. In addition, incomplete application packets will be disqualified.

5. The Department of Communications provides each member of the Bibb Teacher of the Year Committee with copies of the completed application packets. Members of the Bibb Teacher of the Year Committee will be selected each year by the Department of Communications. Members may be asked to serve more than one year. The Committee will be diverse, with representatives from various departments, such as Communications, Teaching and Learning, Professional Learning, and Human Resources. The Committee also may include former finalists for Georgia Teacher of the Year when as available.

6. Committee members read, evaluate and score the application packets based on a rubric. The Committee meets as a group to choose finalists for Bibb Teacher of the Year.

7. The Department of Communications notifies finalists. Finalists are asked to participate in final-round interviews. Phone or virtual interviews will be acceptable if finalists are not available for an in-person interview.

8. The Bibb Teacher of the Year Committee selects the Bibb Teacher of the Year and the Alternate Bibb Teacher of the Year based on a rubric.

8. The Bibb Teacher of the Year and the Alternate Bibb Teacher of the Year are announced and honored at a District event, such as the District's Convocation. Results remain confidential until they are announced. If the District chooses not to have a Convocation, alternate arrangements will be made to announce and celebrate the Bibb Teacher of the Year and the Alternate Bibb Teacher of the Year.

9. The Bibb Teacher of the Year submits the completed Georgia Teacher of the Year state application packet to the Department of Communications by the deadline provided by the Department of Communications.

10. Refer to the Georgia Teacher of the Year Process for the process used at the state level for more information.
