COVID-19 and the Super Bowl - 2/3/21

This week, the Bibb County Board of Education held a Called Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to receive an update on vaccinations for employees in response to COVID-19. After receiving that update, the BOE took two actions.

The first action was to approve the purchase of desk shields for our students and, in some cases, for staff. These desk shields are currently in use at Hutchings College and Career Academy. As we make more information available about the desk shields, I ask that employees familiarize themselves with the product and help us implement its use in an effective manner. The second action the BOE took was to approve a resolution asking Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Public Health (GaDPH) to prioritize teachers in the sequencing of when they can receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, school employees are in what is called “Phase 1B.” The resolution asks that Gov. Kemp and/or GaDPH move school employees to “Phase 1A” so they may start receiving the vaccine now. (Read more about the actions taken at the Called Meeting here.)

I also wanted to take this opportunity to talk to you – our employees and our community – about what we can do individually to make sure our schools are safe for employees and students when they return. What we can and should do is be careful, especially this weekend. The Super Bowl is going to be played on Sunday, and we know that Super Bowl parties and gatherings will continue to be opportunities for people from different households to come together to watch the game and enjoy time together. I ask that if you happen to be one of those who plans to celebrate the Super Bowl with others, that you continue to wear a mask, be socially distanced and protect yourself. I am convinced that we can have a safe learning environment for staff and students if we all collectively pitch in, so please, especially for this Super Bowl weekend, wear your mask, wash your hands, socially distance and be responsible.

Thank you to our employees and our community partners for the work you have been doing this school year. 2020 was tough, and 2021 looks like it is going to be better. This is one of our first opportunities to make sure that it is better.
